They call it a 'wonder drug' and 'miracle cure'

Last Sunday, while reading through a British study on obesity prevention, I came across a very powerful statement made by the UK's Chief Medical Officer in 2009:

"The potential benefits of physical activity to health are huge. If a medication existed which had similar effect, it would be regarded as a 'wonder drug' or a 'miracle cure'."

So what's the big fuss?
Most people think of exercise as a means to lose weight (you're slim, you don't need to exercise!) - but there is muuuch more to it! Besides making us look and feel much better, exercise is scientifically proven to help prevent heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes and many other medical conditions.
But here is the irony: Although we all have free access to this miracle cure, we shy away from it and find every excuse to avoid it.
Another irony is that we take our health for granted until we suffer a major trauma that leaves us in seriously compromised health, if not worse. We work our butts off for years to save money for our retirement, but we forget that we have to take care of our health to be able to enjoy that money.  Over-eating and lack of exercise will eventually take its toll on our body. It's no surprise that heart disease and cancer are the two top causes of death in modern society. A shame when you consider that 80% of these deaths are avoidable by eating better, moving more and not smoking (confirmed by 2 scientific studies).
There is no doubt: Exercise makes you look good,  keeps you young and safeguards your health. Who wouldn't want these benefits?
But knowing is one thing, and doing is another.
If you find it hard to get motivated to exercise on your own, you should definitely consider working out with a coach! Scheduled sessions, supervised by a fitness professional are the best way to get your exercise done regularly and effectively. With your scheduled appointments you have no excuses to miss, and your trainer will make sure you give your utmost in every session. That's how you make progress. Studies show that you are 15 times (!) more likely to stick to a programme if you have someone to report to than if you try to do it on your own.
